If your company is swanky enough to have baristas and janitors on site to clean up the mess, this post isn’t for you. For the rest of us kitchen maintenance is important. Your office manager can’t cover everything. Not everyone has the same level of cleanliness because we all had different upbringings.
As the manager, you also implicitly determine the standard by your habits.
An espresso machine is one of the greatest devices for boosting productivity. Not everyone realizes making coffee requires maintenance. I did the cleaning weekly and I realized this was a good opportunity to teach everyone how to do it in case I wasn’t around.
I asked everyone to come in and hit the button on the espresso machine without the tamper in. The machine began humming and the team wondered why I had them observe.
Yellow liquid spewed out.
That liquid was mixed into every lattes, cappuccinos or mochas made. We were all drinking that foul looking water. I don’t think anyone was harmed. Any thing bad was probably sterilized by the heat. The image is still horrible to think about and nobody wants to knowingly drink that.
Everyone got the idea.
After my demonstration, I noticed the team performing weekly maintenance on the machine. They also requested the office manager to order cleaning supplies. The team also paid more attention wiping down the espresso residue around the sink.
The kitchen environment improved for everyone.
